Room For Ten

Following her piano double album, Maia Wackernagel returns with Room For Ten. Warm Moog synthesisers meet a Steinway grand — complex yet effortlessly accessible, where modern classical music merges with mystical ambient soundscapes and jazz roots surface like a fading memory. Maia Wackernagel’s musical journey has evolved over decades, navigating the space between classical tradition and a desire for creative freedom. Trained as a pianist at the Basel Conservatory and through master’s studies in Paris, her early years were shaped by the works of Ravel, Prokofiev and Bach. A decisive influence came from Olivier Messiaen’s harmonic theory, which opened new perspectives far beyond traditional tonality. Traversing contemporary music, ambient, beats, film scores, and jazz, she gradually developed her own distinctive musical language at the intersection of composition and improvisation—documented on numerous CD releases and shaped by intensive collaborations with a wide range of musicians. Her artistic path has taken her to performances in Switzerland and abroad, both as a soloist and in a variety of ensembles. Particularly enriching for her were artistic collaborations with local musicians at international festivals in West and Central Africa. Visual art, photography, and the layered experiences of a multi-faceted life all serve as key resonance spaces for her musical world. Ultimately, Maia Wackernagel views her work as a place of stillness, friction, and discovery—driven by the desire to find oneself within sound.
