Laurids Richter Quartett

Tribute To Sonny Sharrock

digital · XJM 26013

The quartet of Berlin-based drummer Laurids Richter dedicates its album “Tribute To Sonny Sharrock” to the remarkable work of guitarist Sonny Sharrock. The recordings, made some time ago across two sessions, capture an early moment of the ensemble. Without attempting to replicate Sharrock’s singular voice, the band approaches his music from its own vantage point. They allow themselves to be carried along the paths opened by the unique compositions of an artist whose voice preserves something that remains elusive. Together with Werner Neumann (guitar), Florian Kästner (keys), and Tim Kleinsorge (bass), the ensemble delivers a powerful interpretation of the material. The four musicians move with focus and intent, unfolding a vibrant musical force.

Laurids Richter Quartett

Berlin drummer Laurids Richter, who treats improvisation as existential social interaction, leads a quartet exploring the music of guitarist Sonny Sharrock.

Berlin-based drummer Laurids Richter is an emerging voice in the contemporary jazz scene, approaching improvisation as a meaningful and existential form of social interaction. His work focuses on reduced compositional material and open performance, often shaped in collaborative settings. As a bandleader and sideman he has worked with various artists across jazz and electronic music, and he is also engaged in the intersection of music and neuroscience, working to strengthen music as a human universal in educational contexts for young people. With his quartet he has initiated the project "Tribute to Sonny Sharrock," exploring the music of the iconic guitarist from a distinctly personal perspective. Recorded in early studio sessions, the project reflects his interest in capturing raw ensemble dynamics and immediate musical interplay.
