KINORA 6tet
Jazz / Contemporary / Experimental

A Swiss sextet led by synaesthete trumpeter Sonja Ott and drummer Philipp Leibundgut, translating pigments into expansive jazz suites on the debut Eggshell - End of Time.
The KINORA 6tet is a Swiss sextet led by trumpeter and composer Sonja Ott and drummer and composer Philipp Leibundgut. Since childhood Ott has experienced synaesthesia, perceiving colours when others hear only sound, and this rare gift led her to compose music inspired by colours and pigments. Encouraged by colour researcher Stefan Marthaler, author of the seminal Das Farbenbuch, she developed a series of musical ideas on the interplay of sound and colour, then joined forces with Leibundgut, who expanded her compositions with his distinctive arranging. Written in a "cadavre exquis" process between the two leaders, the pieces of their debut album "Eggshell - End of Time" translate pigments such as Ultramarine Lapis Lazuli, Malachite Green and Purpur into expansive jazz suites, combining rich horn arrangements, shifting rhythmic landscapes, atmospheric textures and adventurous solos. The sextet unites rising European voices - Amalie Dahl and Harben Kay on saxophones, François Lana on piano and Jules Martinet on bass - moving fluidly between modern jazz composition, avant-garde improvisation and lyrical soundscapes. With its bold colours, political undercurrents and emotional depth, Eggshell - End of Time is a distinctive statement from a new generation of European jazz artists.
