Sun Ark's self-titled debut opens with a bright, springy beginning and from there bends into a red-hot, experimental arc. Five musicians from Germany, Sweden and Denmark weave electronic, hip-hop, Brazilian and jazz influences into a lush, colourful, almost orchestral sound. Across twelve tracks, from "Sun," "Wiese" and "Ai Ai" through "Walk" and "Shuggie" to "Crepuscule," "ArkOne" and the closing "Arden," they build a continuous sonic landscape poised between day and dusk. At its centre are Jojo Mann (Johannes Mann; guitars, Casio DG20, synthesizers, production), Asger Nissen (alto saxophone, alto clarinet), Povel Widestrand (keyboards, piano), Thorbjørn Stefánsson (electric and acoustic bass) and Marius Wankel (drums), with Bene Jäckle on flute. Recorded at RecPublica Studios in Poland and mixed and mastered by Martin Ruch at Control Room Berlin, the album was released in 2024 on XJAZZ! Music.

Sun Ark

Five-piece band formed at the Jazz Institut Berlin, weaving electronic, hip-hop, Brazilian and jazz influences into an orchestral sound.

Sun Ark unites five musicians from Germany, Sweden and Denmark who met at the renowned Jazz Institut Berlin. Around founder and composer Johannes Mann (guitar) gather Asger Nissen (alto saxophone), Povel Widestrand (piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizers), Thorbjörn Stefansson (double bass), Marius Wankel (drums) and Bene Jäckle (flute). Their self-titled debut, released on XJAZZ! Music in 2024, weaves electronic, hip-hop, Brazilian and jazz influences into a lush, colourful and orchestral sound. Mann describes it as "exploring a landscape" — a sonic story in which beat-driven grooves drift from composed pieces into skilful ambient passages and collective improvisation.
