Running And Belonging

Digital / CD · XJM25013

„Running And Belonging“ is the debut album of ALLOY, the Berlin ensemble led by trombonist and composer Marleen Dahms. Across ten tracks the band explores themes of running and belonging, melting five musicians into a powerful, melodious sound body. Alongside Dahms (trombone, composition) the group features Lisa Buchholz (trumpet), Johannes Mann (guitar), Luca Curcio (double bass) and Steven Moser (drums), with guest appearances by percussionist Afrogame and flutist Vincent Bababoutilabo, notably on the title track and „Aribau“. Recorded in August 2024 at JRS Studios and mixed and mastered by Lukas Fehling, the album moves between memorable melodies, collective interplay and socially grounded storytelling. Released on XJAZZ! Music.

Marleen Dahms` ALLOY

Berlin trombonist Marleen Dahms leads the quintet ALLOY, whose debut Running and Belonging fuses Afro-Latin rhythms and Black American traditions into a reflection on identity and home.

Marleen Dahms is a Berlin-based trombonist, improviser and composer. Besides her quintet ALLOY, for which she composes, she performs with numerous bands across Europe, from experimental large ensembles and small jazz groups to salsa bands and well-known pop artists. Having lived in Spain, Ecuador, Switzerland and Germany, she draws on these influences in a fierce, intuitive and expressive playing that mirrors her urge to process emotions through music. ALLOY is the melting together of five musicians into a strong, melodious and rough body of sound. Reflecting Dahms's love for lyrical trombonists, melancholic guitar trios, Afro-Latin rhythms, Black American music traditions and improvised music, the compositions express an urge to connect with emotion. The band's debut album "Running and Belonging" is a reflection on identity, on the world's order and disorder, on present responsibilities and the search for home. The Berlin-based group brings together musicians from various scenes: Marleen Dahms on trombone, Lisa Buchholz on trumpet, Johannes Mann on guitar, Luca Curcio on double bass and Steven Moser on drums, with featured percussionist Afrogame and flutist Vincent Bababoutilabo.
