"Crosscurrent" is the debut album by Larceny, gathering nine original compositions inspired by the band's trip to the Faroe Islands for the Vetrarjazz festival in January 2022. Like a travel diary, the album translates the natural phenomena and personal experiences of that journey into modern jazz, from "Travelogue" and the title track through "Wet Dry Wet," "Aldur" and "Overnight Trip" to the cinematic "Midnight Cinema." Behind the project is a classically configured quintet led by bandleader and drummer David Giesel, with Julian Drach (alto saxophone), Pauli Poulsen (guitar), Moritz Langmaier (piano) and Jan Mikio Kappes (bass). The interplay of saxophone, guitar and piano over a nimble rhythm section yields a contemporary quintet sound that swings between narrative calm and energetic drive. Released in 2023 on XJAZZ! Music.

Larceny

Drummer David Giesel's band whose debut Crosscurrent, written around a trip to the Faroe Islands, balances complexity and simplicity with room for every voice.

Larceny is the project founded by drummer David Giesel, who is active as a sideman in numerous bands and has shared the stage with artists such as Christoph Neuhaus, Alexander "Sandi" Kuhn, Joo Kraus, Stefan Karl Schmid and Volker Engelberth. In 2021 he realised his wish for his own band, joined by Julian Drach on alto saxophone, Pauli Poulsen on guitar, Moritz Langmaier on piano and Jan Mikio Kappes on bass. After their 2022 EP "Shapes," the group presents its debut album "Crosscurrent" with nine original compositions written during and after a trip to the Faroe Islands, where the band performed at the Vetrarjazz festival in January 2022. The album continues the sound of the EP and takes listeners into a world of beauty, collectively creating a field of tension between complexity and simplicity that leaves ample room for each musician's voice - the focus never on the band's initiator but always on authentic expression. The Faroese landscape shapes the record throughout: natural phenomena resonate in tracks like the title piece and "Aldur," while pieces such as "Overnight Trip" and "Midnight Cinema" hold personal experiences.
