"Songs And Improvisations" is a solo piano album by Berlin-based pianist and composer Jan Gerdes that oscillates between classical, jazz and contemporary music. Starting from fully composed or merely sketched thematic cells, the pieces unfold from sensual, intimate stillness to rhythmically pulsing motion, always driven by improvisational freedom. The eleven titles range from "Empty Waltz," "Permanent Green" and "Der Fussgänger" through "Verweht," "November" and "Saif" to "Im Raum stets sichtbar" and "Kerben," drawing a quiet, many-layered mood. Recorded on a Steinway grand piano, produced by Michael Ungerer at Soundfabrik Berlin and mastered at the Emil Berliner Studios, with artwork by Gerdes himself and design by Sandra Meifahrt. Schooled in the classical-romantic tradition yet drawn to contemporary writing, Gerdes shapes a neoclassical, transparent solo portrait. Released in 2023 on XJAZZ! Music.

Berlin pianist and composer Jan Gerdes blends classical roots with jazz and contemporary music, whose solo project Songs and Improvisations preserves improvisational freedom within structure.

Jan Gerdes is a Berlin pianist and composer, a renowned interpreter of classical-romantic and contemporary piano music who has earned significant attention for performing works by many outstanding composers of our time. Alongside his project "rand" for piano and electronics, whose album "Périphérie" (2022) received excellent reviews, he has created a series of piano compositions and songs in recent years, as well as a full-length solo piano project called "Songs and Improvisations." Reflecting his classical roots and influences from contemporary music and jazz, his pieces are surprisingly new and not easily categorised: "Songs and Improvisations" oscillates between classical, jazz and contemporary worlds, starting from fully composed or sketched thematic cells and ranging from sensually intimate to rhythmically pulsating, all while preserving improvisational freedom. That freedom adds an exciting dimension to the listening experience, allowing for spontaneity and creativity within a structured framework, making his music a fusion of influences that appeals to a wide range of listeners.
