Die Wildnis
Digital · XJM22005
Oleg Hollmann and Sebastian Deufel are the minds behind „Die Wildnis“ („the wilderness“). The sound of the Berlin duo is founded on the restriction to two main instruments — baritone saxophone and drums — yet unfolds through the full expressive means of the recording studio. Between these opposing poles, the heavy mass of sound is cast into shape over the album's seven tracks, while the collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Ruth Schepers, who adds flute on two tracks, lends a metallic sheen. Both the musical frugality and the context make this a political album. Recorded at Studio Wong in Berlin-Kreuzberg in the winter of 2021/2022, it asks what it means to make music in times of war. Sarcasm, silence, excess and the feeling of shock condense into seven pieces of song, chaos, harshness, melancholy and cynicism — a dark work about creating art while the world faces war.
