The Fabia Mantwill Orchestra is a 23-piece ensemble of international musicians — a combination of a chamber orchestra with eleven strings and a jazz large ensemble, led by saxophonist, vocalist and composer Fabia Mantwill. Inspired by the time she has spent in places around the world — Africa, South America, Asia and Europe — Mantwill's compositions bridge several distinct musical worlds, from jazz to folk to classical. Her work draws on both intimate and cultural spaces, turning that encounter into a singular musical experience. On the album „Orchestra“, the large ensemble unfolds this polyphony in full: orchestral density and improvisational freedom interlock, while string textures and horn arrangements shape a sound that submits to no single tradition. „Orchestra“ was released on XJAZZ! Music.

Fabia Mantwill

Berlin composer, conductor and saxophonist (German Jazz Prize 2021) whose Orchestra expands the big-band sound with strings and harp.

Fabia Mantwill is a Berlin-based composer, conductor and saxophonist and a recipient of the 2021 German Jazz Prize in the category Arrangement of the Year (for "Ophelia"). She holds a Master of Music & Composition from HfMT Hamburg and a Bachelor in Jazz from the Jazz-Institut Berlin, and was a guest student at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 2015. With her Fabia Mantwill Orchestra — a signature jazz chamber orchestra — she challenges the traditional big-band sound by treating strings and harp as an integral component of her large-scale orchestral conception. She has worked with artists such as Vince Mendoza, Kurt Elling, Becca Stevens and the Metropole Orkest, and since 2022 has served as artistic director of the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra.
