Hearts Of Palm

Digital / FLAC · XJM24005 · 32:29

„Hearts Of Palm“ is the debut album of drummer and composer Eden Har-Gil – six original compositions that explore themes of growth and transition across roughly 32 minutes. Har-Gil assembles a distinguished quartet for it: Dezron Douglas on acoustic bass, Caroline Davis on alto saxophone and Lo Wood on baritone saxophone. From this chamber-tight horns-bass-drums setting emerges an intimate, modern jazz that, despite its compact running time, leaves room to breathe and develop. The pieces – among them the title track „Hearts of Palm“, „Amarna“, „Embedded“, „Pinks“, „Leaf“ and „Nethermead“ – feel concentrated and personal, never reaching for easy effect. Rather than grand gestures, Har-Gil favours melodic clarity and the nuanced interplay of two saxophones complementing each other across the lower and middle registers. It is a quiet, carefully shaped first statement from a bandleader who keeps the voices of his collaborators at the centre.
