„M“

Digital (FLAC 44.1) · XJM25017 · 1:11:18

Turn up the speakers: an electric guitar is at its best when it sounds truly electric – and even more beautiful when two electric guitars sing together. On „M“, Berlin guitar wizard Christian Kögel crosses strings with his colleague Kalle Kalima, in the lineage of classics such as Santana and McLaughlin's „Love, Devotion, Surrender“. Driving battles reminiscent of the best days of the Seventies alternate with collaboratively designed soundscapes of the kind labels like ECM developed in the 1980s. Supported by bassist Paul Kleber and drummer Hans Otto, Kögel and Kalima fire off 14 energy-packed songs across 71 minutes – sometimes letting the strings scream, sometimes galloping in an ostinato, sometimes gliding gently. For the first time Kögel can also be heard on pedal steel guitar, lending his vocabulary a floating, subtle stamp. In the words of Wolf Kampmann, „M“ is the hypnotic manifesto of four passionate collective storytellers, best listened to on repeat. Released on XJAZZ! Music.

Christian Kögel

Berlin jazz guitarist (also oud, dobro) working between jazz, rock, free improvisation and Arabic music.

Christian Kögel is a German jazz musician (guitar, oud, dobro, composition) working in the field between jazz, rock, free improvisation, Arabic music and chamber music. A native of southern Bavaria, he began classical guitar at ten and has lived in Berlin since 1990, where he studied classical guitar at the Hochschule der Künste and then jazz with David Friedman and Jerry Granelli. From 1998 to 2000 he studied oud and traditional Arabic music with Syrian virtuoso Farhan Sabbagh; today he teaches jazz guitar at UdK Berlin. His double album "M" (2025, XJAZZ! Music) was created with his new band featuring Kalle Kalima (guitar), Paul Kleber (bass) and Hans Otto (drums) — a guitar album for lovers of the electric guitar sound.
