When is a band a band? When something shared emerges from unmistakable individual voices – not the lowest common denominator, but the greatest possible space for each player to develop. BREU is such a band. Its namesake Maximilian Breu shapes it with his idiosyncratic, highly energetic drumming and his compositions, moving refreshingly far from any jazz cliché: odd rhythms, angular ostinati, sudden upheavals, fraying edges. With BREU you can never be sure what comes next – yet in retrospect everything coheres with astonishing persuasive power. The music develops organically, sometimes surging ahead indie-rock style, then pausing, bubbling underneath, taking detours. The collective's other unmistakable voices are the virtuoso Andreas Dombert on often sound-alienated guitar, the remarkably versatile Olga Reznichenko on piano and keyboard, and the eminent Robert Lucaciu on double bass. „Energize To Finalize“ is living proof that improvised music for open ears, with a broad stylistic vision, is alive in the 21st century.

A collective shaped by drummer Maximilian Breu, making unpredictable, cliche-free improvised music where odd rhythms and sudden upheavals cohere with surprising force.

When does a band become a band? When something shared emerges from unmistakable individual voices - not the lowest common denominator, but the greatest possible space for each player to develop. BREU is such a band. Its namesake Maximilian Breu shapes it with idiosyncratic, highly energetic drumming and his compositions, moving refreshingly far from any jazz cliché: odd rhythms, angular ostinati, sudden upheavals, fraying and crumbling, so that you can never be sure what comes next. Yet what comes has a persuasive power that lends the songs an astonishing coherence in retrospect. Alongside Breu, the collective features the virtuoso Andreas Dombert on explosive, often sound-alienated guitar, the versatile Olga Reznichenko on piano and keyboard, and Robert Lucaciu, whose double bass forms a wonderfully flexible foundation. The band has toured Central America, playing nine concerts and various workshops across Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico in March 2023 with the support of the Goethe-Institut.
