Nocturnal Journey

Digital · XJM23005

"Nocturnal Journey" is ASRA's debut album and a musical reading of the night: a set of original compositions inviting the listener on a journey between American and European jazz. Warm acoustic sounds meet quiet electro-acoustic touches, from the night-blue opener "Blue" through the title track to the fading "Soliloquy." The quintet, Catherine Tang (keys), Ruben Kilchling (flute/saxophone), Joseph Bijon (guitar), Paul Pattusch (bass) and Lucas Zibulski (drums, percussion), brings in guest voices on two pieces: Sarahfina Osei on "Blue" and Emmanuelle Bonnet on "Girl Dancing Like a Flower." The album was recorded at Jazzcampus Basel with Berlin-based producer Michael Haves, who also handled recording, mixing and mastering. The result is a cohesive, song-oriented nocturnal arc that captures both the stillness and the creative energy of darkness. Released in 2023 on XJAZZ! Music.

ASRA

A young Basel quintet whose original music drifts between American and European jazz and pop, in warm acoustic and electroacoustic colours.

ASRA is a young quintet from Basel whose name derives from an Arabic girl's name meaning "the night traveller" or "nocturnal journey." Comprising Catherine Tang on keys, Ruben Kilchling on alto saxophone, Joseph Bijon on guitar, Paul Pattusch on bass and Lucas Zibulski on drums, the group invites listeners on a musical journey through original compositions that move between American and European jazz and pop moments. Warm acoustic sounds and flashes of electroacoustics encourage the mind to wander. Over two years the band worked intensively on its first musical ideas, all the way to the final studio recording, leaving a fresh footprint as a young quintet finding its own language and form in the modern jazz reality.
