Anna Margolina

Song Of A Girl

CD / Digital / Digital HD · XJM26015

On her second studio album "Song Of A Girl", jazz singer Anna Margolina turns Yiddish poetry into music. The songs set the verse of poet Anna Margolin (1887–1952), with whom the singer shares not only her name but also her country of origin, a woman who lived in New York a century ago and whose work now feels more relevant than ever. For the first time, Margolina presents her own compositions, co-written with bassist Paul Kleber. The result is a broad, melodic and contemporary view of jazz: elements of folk, soul and electronics flow in, carried by a strong collective of versatile musicians. The lead single "Di Goldene Pave" reaches back to Margolina's earlier engagement with the Yiddish song tradition while building a bridge to the present. A personal, literarily grounded work about identity, memory and the female voice.

Anna Margolina

A Berlin-based singer born in Minsk who turns the poetry of her namesake Anna Margolin into a broad, melodic jazz embracing folk, soul and electronics.

Born into a musical family in Minsk, Anna Margolina lived there until the age of eight, when in 1992 her mother set out on a one-way journey to Berlin that dramatically changed the course of her life. For many years the singer struggled to adapt to the mentalities around her and to feel a true sense of connection, a search she defines as the centre of her musical career. On her studio album "Song of a Girl" she turns poetry into music, rediscovering the compelling work of writer Anna Margolin (1887-1952), with whom she shares both her name and her country of origin. The result is a broad, melodic and contemporary view of jazz that embraces elements of folk, soul and electronic music, presented with a strong collective of versatile musicians: Arseny Rykov on piano, Martin Krümmling on drums and backing vocals, and Paul Kleber on double bass, backing vocals, composition and production.
