Magro

A German Jazz Prize-winning Berlin drummer and producer whose album II fuses spacey jazz, hip-hop beats and synthetic productions with an array of vocal and instrumental guests.

Magro is a Berlin drummer and producer whose debut album "Trippin'" (2021) won the German Jazz Prize for Debut Album of the Year. As a drummer and producer he has worked with numerous artists across styles - including Stimulus, Yvonne Mwale, J Lamotta, Tóke, Jakob Manz and Telemakus - and toured the world with appearances at festivals such as Tremplin Jazz Avignon, Jazz Al Popolo Rome, the Women in Music Festival in Zambia and the Havana World Music Festival, before launching his solo project in 2020 to realise his own musical vision. On his follow-up album "II" (pronounced "two"), spacey jazz worlds meet pumping hip-hop beats, and live recordings mingle with abstract synthetic productions in what Magro describes as an emotional expression of how music with a jazz attitude sounds to him now. Most of the record was made with his band improvising in the studio, joined by guests including singers Leona Berlin and Kenny Wesley, rappers MC Rapturous and TwizzMatic, and New York piano virtuoso BIGYUKI; atmospheric samples gathered on a trip to Mexico and Los Angeles lend the album a unique tonal diversity.
