Anima
Jazz / Nu Jazz

A Dresden nu-jazz quintet that pursues a raw, immersive sound through diffuse atmospheres, driving rhythms and a fusion of composition and improvisation.
ANIMA is a five-piece band based in Dresden, Germany, working in the genre of nu jazz. Its sound is shaped by trumpet (Joel Ferrando), vibraphone (Arthur Clees), guitar and baritone guitar (Lorenz Glöckner), double bass (Kevin Knödler) and drums (Samuel Dietze). The name is drawn from psychoanalysis, where the anima describes a part of the soul holding qualities opposite to one's own ego, wishes and ideals; appearing in dreams, visions and fantasies, it embodies human ambivalence and abstract messages, and symbolises the band's aesthetic and vision. ANIMA seeks its own raw expression through diffuse atmospheres, driving rhythms and emotional melodies, opening up spaces for listeners to immerse themselves in. Composition and improvisation are not set in opposition but merge into a unified experience of maximum dynamic and climactic range, telling stories that captivate through dramaturgy and surprise. The band constantly experiments with new timbres and textures while keeping focus on a holistic, organic group sound, and complements its music with spoken lyrics and samples.
